Treo 600 Video Tidbits
Just came across a story of the Treo 600 launch at Palm Infocenter, which had a nice link to ZDNet's video interview with Jeff Hawkins at the Treo 600 launch party in San Francisco. Jeff talks about the design philosophy and things learned and applied when designing the Treo 600 and about product design in general.
In another ZDNet video interview, Donna Dubinsky talks about the challenges that the Treo 600 will face in a global market. She discusses particularly older Treo plusses (well integrated PDA/Phone) and the minuses: mainly its honkin' size and PDA-ness compared to mobile phones.
There's also a video interview at c|net on the Treo 600. This one features Joni Blecher (cellphone diva at c|net) and shows a bit nicer comparison of the old and new Treo lines.
Some of my European pals suggest that the Treo 600 is still too big -- I believe that it isn't really too big actually, for what it does. Have to remember that for the general user, it combines two devices so it has to have a reasonably large screen. I actually prefer a phone that's not too terribly small, because really small phones feel awkward when making a call.
I do like the Treo 600's thumboard, which I suspect will make it a big hit for users who do alot of SMS or email. Probably the only minus is lack of integrated Bluetooth, which would have been very nice for linking wirelessly with a Bluetooth headset or for internet access on a laptop. Yeah, a Bluetooth SD card would do the trick but it means more card shuffling. At least the Treo 600 has an SD card slot, important for on the road backups of the device (a big minus in the original Treo line).
